Brand Spotlight: KIMHEKIM
With eccentric designs, giant organza bows, and a little controversy, it’s no surprise this Paris-based brand is gaining attention—
Kimhekim, the namesake brand of Studio Bercot graduate and Balenciaga alum, Kiminte Kimhekim, made their official debut at a flower shop in 2014; a venue choice that remains fitting due to their continual propagation of the flower motif.
Indeed, Kimhekim asserts the belief that “the flower’s life is a microcosm of the human’s life.” This floral likeness, among other organic shapes, can be seen in many of the brand’s designs—even if only for a flitting moment; sometimes, it just takes a keen eye to notice.
As a brand goal, Kiminte Kimhekim expresses an aim to symbolize the Korean Golden Kingdom, an era during which artistic achievements thrived under the royal family who shared his surname. Additional goals include the amelioration of the decorative arts, reinventing the women’s silhouette, and blending past and future trends.
True to their aims, Kimhekim features interesting, embellished silhouettes that are both contemporary and reminiscent of decades past. Sometimes, Kimhekim’s designs are even paradoxical, appearing both decorative and minimal at once. With big, doll-like bows and delicate, sheer fabrics, “playful” and “ethereal” are two words that come to mind after taking a look at his recent collections.
While some pieces look like they were conjured from a fairy tale—sweet like honey—draped and fitted with delicacy, others have a bolder presence: each piece emitting its own unique quality. Kimhekim’s clothing manifests the complexity of feminine charm.
Kiminte takes a flattering approach to silhouette that embraces the female form while creating interesting shapes that flow organically from the figure, whether downwards or outwards. His statement pieces are for the archetypal cool girl. They are bold, playful…just cool.
He is quoted by Divia Harilela in an article for Post Magazine saying, “My work combines influences from both my Parisian and Asian roots. For me, the silhouette and fabric is always changing and I try to be playful, unique but still elegant. I want to make a woman appear sexier but in an elegant way.” He states in the article that he wants those who wear his clothes to feel special.
Kimhekim’s most recent SS20 collection, entitled “ME,” upholds the characteristics of collections past while experimenting with new shapes as well. The collection features oversized office wear, sultry cutout tops, and giant organza bows.
